A facility I volunteer at has lights that are to be left on after hours. When I started there was just a 3x5 card taped over the light switches. But sometimes these lights have to be turned off. The result was the 3x5 card getting dirty and torn. So I set out to create my first model created with FreeCAD, a simple hinged cover with the words "LEAVE ON." I started by making a recessed hole for the screws, then I added a hinge.
Finally a box to that hinge to cover the light switches. Immediately after installing I become concerned with how far out the box stuck out into the room. The depth of the box was easily four times deeper than it needed to be. The letters are indented in the box. This worked for two weeks before my dad got his shirt caught on the corner and broke the hinge.
The first thing I did was strengthen the hinge by making it slightly thicker. I then slanted the sides to keep anyones clothing getting caught. Next, I made the box more shallow. I could still shave some depth off the box, but I felt I had reduced its size so it wouldn't get bumped. And by this time the AMS I ordered for my Bambu X1 Carbon arrived, so I changed the words to be out-set and black. Unfortunately I didn't have a big enough purge tower, so there is some color bleed into the white layers. I had anticipated having to reprint this after another failure, but so far this version has lasted the better part of a year. You can download the model here.
